The Clinton Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Team shut Williamsville Girls out 1-0 in the

Championship Game of the NYSPHSAA Girls Hockey Regional Championships. The series was held on the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, site of the “Miracle on Ice” 40 years ago.

The game, played on Sunday due to snow delaying the semis, was 0-0 through the third period. Clinton’s Captain Mia Lopata got the puck past Williamsville Goalie Mia Wendell at 6:37 of the third on the power-play and the game ended 1-0. The assist went to Abby Kurdziolek.

Both goalies, Hailey Millington for Clinton and Wendell for Williamsville, had shut outs in the semi-finals. Millington holding off Salmon River 1-0 and Wendell kept Plattsburgh from scoring and Williamsville won that game 7-0.

Williamsville was defending their 2019 NYS Championship and also the title for Section VI from 2018 when Frontier/LakeShore/Orchard Park took the title home.

A WNY Highlight is Coach Rick Hopkins, Williamsville, coached his 200th game Saturday against Plattsburgh.

This is the first Championship for Clinton.
